Loveda Brown: Lover’s Knot

An Idyllwild wedding is threatened when visions of the future are clouded by secrets of the past.

Loveda Brown is a bridesmaid in the tiny mountainside town of Idyllwild, California, as yet the Wild West of 1912, but with the wedding only three days away, a guest drops face first into the chicken salad. Is it misdiagnosis or murder? Between a fortune teller, a nosy reporter, four physicians, and an overbearing aunty, Loveda wanders a maze of deceit to uncover the killer before the bride pays the ultimate price for a secret in the groom’s past.

Ms. Tunnell has done it again! Another witty whodunit with believable characters, vivid descriptions, and a tangle of angles sure to keep you wondering who the murderer is until the very end. Thoroughly enjoyable and hard to put down. Idyllwild sounds so idyllic. Makes me want to take a road trip!

This was, without a doubt, the most exciting wedding I’ve ever attended. When Loveda is involved, strange and dangerous events happen.

Loveda Brown, Lover’s Knot is the fifth book in a series but can easily be read as a standalone. Although I had not read any books in this series before, I was easily swept into this novel, with its quirky cast of characters and compelling storyline. Loveda is a strong woman at a time when men ruled the roost, and she is quick to sniff out a mystery. When a woman dies under suspicious circumstances, Loveda is not content with the explanations of the men present and sets out to investigate for herself. Full of fun, intrigue, twists, turns, and even some fortune-telling, this book will keep you entertained. I found the writing to be exceptional. It grabs you and takes you on an adventure that can be both humorous and perilous. I felt transported back to 1912 to this tiny town in the west. Will I seek out the rest of this series to read? That’s no mystery. You bet I will.

My only slight criticism is on the cover. The cover itself is very pretty, especially when displayed in a set with the other books in the series. But the author’s name is too small and hardly visible. I suggest the author make her name larger on the cover. And that’s my only critique. Shout your name out, Jolie! You’re a talented writer.

Loveda Brown: Lover’s Knot by Jolie Tunnell is the fifth book in the Idyllwild Mystery series. Molly’s wedding is finally approaching. In just a few days, the whole town will be celebrating Molly’s marriage to Lindley. The big day is threatened when one of the guests dies and foul play is suspected. Loveda already has her hands full with bridesmaid duties, but if she doesn’t investigate, the bride could be next. Finding the killer is easier said than done as secrets tied to the past come to light, including one that leads Loveda back to Lindley.

Molly’s wedding takes center stage in this mystery with the plot revolving around the wedding as the catalyst for secrets to be revealed. Loveda continues to be the protector of the town with a determination that feels like the driving force of Idyllwild. She has a personality that just gets better with each book as she’s strong-willed, bold, and not afraid to be herself. A humorous and great example of this can be found in her pride in getting the respect of the local men because she can ride, shoot, rope, and cuss. Jolie Tunnell delves further into the history of Idyllwild, such as a former sanatorium which ties into the mystery through an incident that connects to Lindley and could affect more than just the couple. A few twists will take you by surprise as the story unfolds and as you root for Molly to get her perfect day.

The writing continues to make use of great imagery that captures the period with subtle word usage. You get a clear image of this town that has a Wild West aesthetic with a charming small-town exterior. The humor is driven by the dynamics between the characters but is specifically seen through the spunky nature of Loveda. It’s the perfect time for a wedding in Loveda Brown: Lover’s Knot which finds Loveda doing all she can to save her friend’s big day and solve a murder with surprising secrets and twists found along the way.
