Not much depth and short-but so good! — Siawilin ★★★★★
It is always great to find a new author that I like through the offering of one of the books for free-and this author has me hooked on her Loveda Brown series about a single woman trying to run a hotel in the early 1900s in California. In many ways, it is a western murder mystery/romance I guess and somehow the chemistry of this situation worked well for me. I especially appreciated that it was clean and not filled with vile language or sexual escapades and balanced out with humor. Somehow the combination really worked to provide me with some good “fluff” reading. (Nothing serious, nothing especially violent, just entertaining.)
Tantalizing History— Jennifer A. Adams ★★★★★
This started a little slower paced than before….Oh just you wait this book number four “4”….I couldn’t wait to turn each page and follow the path!!
The Best Yet— Evan ★★★★★
A seemingly random murder ratchets up the tension in Idyllwild as the summer heats sets in. A fast-talking salesman flips Lindley’s marriage plans on edge. A nervous chain-smoker drops in for some needed r&r. Are they really who they say they are? Can they help solve the random murder? Or will they fall in-line with a gang of train robbers who drop by to complete some unfinished business? What hidden secrets will the town have to reveal, will Loveda be able to play hero again, or will she discover more about her fellow-residents than she bargained for?
I managed to set aside plenty more time to read this book than the last one and so I finished it quite a lot quicker. And that was helped along by the book as it presents a mystery right off the bat and sticks to that script a lot closer than the previous episodes.
I have to say I was a bit unsure how a seemingly typical, but random murder mystery would play out, and I had my initial misgivings, but the pacing was excellent and the tension never let up. As much as I’ve enjoyed the previous books in this series, I felt this one was the best yet.
This book delves lot deeper into the backgrounds of many important characters in the series helping to flesh out a lot about some of some characters that previously seemed to be side-players who would remain as enigmas. The ending was a bit more on the somber side as a ending was quite as happy as one would have hoped. But, I dare say the books keep getting better and better as the series goes along, and I’m looking forward to starting book 5.

A joy to read — LK, Reader’s Favorite ★★★★★
Loveda Brown: Summer Storm by Jolie Tunnell is the fourth book in the Idyllwild Mystery series. The wild west will never be the same after reading the delightful mysteries that Loveda finds herself in. Loveda is no stranger to the issues that plague her charming town. She’s solved everything from murder to an orphaned baby left at the hotel. Now she’ll face a gang of outlaws. A train robbery sends the robbers directly to Loveda’s hotel where they set out to settle a grudge against someone in Idyllwild. Meanwhile, more guests bring new mysteries while a secret comes to light and Loveda faces new dangers. To protect the town she loves, she’ll face a choice that could lead to a betrayal.
The writing is delightful thanks to Jolie Tunnell’s fun prose that delivers a blend of humor, mystery, and the wild west. This tone is evident in various scenes, like an adorable moment when Loveda writes her name and thinks about how her name smacked of humble spinsterhood. Loveda will quickly become a favorite sleuth, as she has an endearing personality that is a joy to read. She has a playfulness about her, such as putting on her new holster with pride, yet has the strength to run a hotel, solve mysteries, and stand her ground against dangerous forces. The guests provide a new assortment of characters to the hotel, along with the other chaos that invades Loveda’s life.
Tunnell delivers vivid details such as a weather-lined face, the aroma of manure masking the smell of an ancient community outhouse, and rain bringing a thunderous pounding as the heavens finally opened. The setting is 1912 and is established through various mannerisms, dialogue, and details, revolving around a quaint town that is authentically true to the wild west. Subtle details are used to capture the feeling of this period with horses, cowboys, and outlaws, while minor elements are included to show the growth of the town out of this time period such as references to automobiles. The wild west comes to life in Loveda Brown: Summer Storm which has a fast-paced mystery with a plot that moves quickly, charming characters, an idyllic town, and train robbers.
